Project Description

THE ESLAVA THEATER OPENS ITS DOORS WITH A COMPREHENSIVE RENOVATION OF ITS SPACE AND ITS LEISURE AND CULTURE OFFER

The emblematic Eslava building, inaugurated in 1871 as a theater in the central Arenal street in Madrid, is part of the cultural heritage of the city, being a benchmark in the entertainment sector in the capital. In its more than 150 years of history, the venue has witnessed great experiences, housing a cafe, a variety room, a theater, a concert hall or a television set, becoming the epicenter of the “movida” in Madrid in the 1980s. Since last March, after the comprehensive renovation of the space and its reopening under the name of Teatro Eslava, the historic theater promises to continue to be a benchmark for leisure, combining cultural heritage and tradition, with avant-garde and modernity, in a cultural offer that is a must for local and foreign visitors.

The main attraction to highlight in the new offer is the sum of different pieces connected under the same roof: the Eslava Theater. Inside, various types of experiences programmed in different time slots during the week will coexist. A Show Dinner: Olé-Olá is an avant-garde flamenco show accompanied by a typically Spanish gastronomic experience, the direct promotion of sessions by international DJs aimed at an adult, local and international, general and VIP audience; the direct promotion of live music of different styles, with national and international artists, through live concerts and the rental of the space for MICE events, with the possibility of contracting the catering of Teatro Eslava.

To carry out this ambitious project, the interior design of Philippe Starck, one of the most influential and well-known architects and designers worldwide, has been used. The challenge of its comprehensive reform was to adapt to the needs of the different activities to be housed, turning it into a versatile, diverse and changing space, creating an elegant and pleasant atmosphere that guarantees viewers a unique experience that incorporates the latest audiovisual technology. For all these reasons, the space has four different configurations for each of the Eslava Theater activities: Olé-Olá dinner show, events, club/nightlife and live concerts.

The human team in charge of the technical design of the renovated Eslava Theater has not been left behind and has established itself as a fundamental factor in the project. Under the general direction of Pedro Martínez, it is worth mentioning the contribution of the different technical actors who have participated with their talent and knowledge in adapting and establishing the concept of space on the ground. The technical direction was carried out by Moises Robles (Illusion Stage), while Eduardo Torallas was in charge of the direction of production and visual content of the show Olé-Olá. Said flamenco show has been directed by Cristina Hoyos with José Carlos Plaza as stage director, and whose lighting design was carried out by Carlos Torrijos. The sound design was carried out by Javier Isequilla, while the lighting design for the Club configurations and live concerts was carried out by Enrique Jiménez (Fluge Audiovisuales). Thanks to the trust of Teatro Eslava, Fluge Audiovisuales has deployed all its resources for the installation and start-up of the entire audiovisual infrastructure of the theatre, lighting, sound, video, motorization, trusses and communications.

The space was equipped with a complete communications infrastructure with the capacity to celebrate any type of event. More than 24 boxes with DMX, audio, data, fiber optic and power connections with Socapex connectors were displayed in the environment, all of them made to measure and designed to meet the quality requirements of the Eslava Theater. Three main control rooms for lighting and sound intercommunicated with all the boxes of the space and the main control of the theater were implemented. This allows all kinds of signals (analog and digital) to be used without having to add extra wiring, allowing for more efficient holding of events. In numbers: 2.5 km of Socapex cabling, 5 km of Cat6A data cabling, 55 Socapex connections, 1 km of fiber with connections of up to 32 pairs, 1 km of DMX data and more than six months of work. Finally, connection tests were carried out on all the communication lines, guaranteeing the reliability of the installation and its correct operation. For the development of this infrastructure, Carlos Torrijos and Javier Isequilla collaborated.

Regarding the video provision, Fluge Audiovisuales was in charge of designing a hybrid video system, unifying the Watchout 6 multiscreen system and the Blocks content management software. The room was equipped with an immersive video system made up of 20 70” monitors from the manufacturer Sharp distributed along the walls of the theater and 3 large-format LED screens: main screen of 6.5 x 5 meters, secondary break of 7, 5 x 5.5 meters and a primary break of 8.5 x 6 meters, all of them with a 2.9 mm pitch and controlled by Novastar 4K system. Thanks to an independent distribution of the video signals with the HDBaseT protocol to each display, it is possible to generate immersive environments and effects in the room. NDI technology (from the manufacturer NewTek) is also included to capture the video signals that are needed in the room regardless of the type of event. Likewise, Fluge Audiovisuales developed the 70” side displays supports to integrate the moldings with Philippe Starck’s art department and create the artistic paintings effect as a result.

In addition, the historic exterior hall surroundings were adapted to replace the old paper that advertised the concerts with high-gloss exterior screens whose content is controlled by Blocks software. This software allows content management with time programming and easy use, including the possibility of making these changes remotely.
